If you have been following my recent customs, you will know that I am on a Dr. Who kick right now. Right now I am finishing up a set of four aliens and monsters, including Morbius pictured above. If you are unfamiliar with the character, you can see a screenshot of his apearance in The Brain of Morbius here. Morbius had some unique challenges, so I decided to take some pictures during his creation.

Back when I was working on my Watcher minimate, an interesting thought popped into my head. I don’t remember the exact words, but it was something like “I’ll bet DST wishes they could make a Watcher minimate like this.” Because while DST is limited to the 2″ size (plus a little height for accessories), I was free to make a 2.5″ minimate with a 3″ minimate head. The Watcher simply wouldn’t be the Watcher without a giant head. This train of thoughts continued on to other areas in which customizers have an advantage over official minimates.
As customizers, we usually try to copy the official product. But there are areas in which we can surpass official minimates by stepping outside of the restrictions that DST faces. Realizing this can help you in many ways. Click the title to read a few examples of what I mean.

Creating the packaging for my Psycho minimates was both fun and challenging. I documented the process with photos, with the intention of showing you the project from start to finish. However, my 2 year old son seems to have “misplaced” the flash drive that those photos were stored on, so I will be documenting a different packaging project instead. I have a new set of 4 marvel customs in the works, and I thought it would be fun to create packaging for this set. Part 1 of this series shows how to prepare your customs for packaging.

In case you haven’t noticed, site updates have been coming weekly now instead of bi-weekly. Now that I have two kids under three years old, my free time seems to slip away quickly. I expect it to stay weekly for at least the next few months. This means that some posts will cover multiple topics, like this one.
The first thing I wanted to mention is that I changed the terms of use for all the decals available on this site. Everything is now under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works license. This means you are not allowed to sell minimates that use these decals. I had always intended for these decals to be for personal use, but now its official.
And speaking of decals, I updated my gallery with some of my recent Dr. Who decals, including the menacing Cyberman at the top of this post! I have other Dr. Who customs in the works as we speak, and I will update the decal gallery with new decals as they are finished.
Finally, CustomCon 22 is now live! There have not been any minimates posted yet, but I am sure we will see some in the next few days. I have a minimate 4-pack in the mix that I am really excited to see on display. New customs will be posted each day here.

After using Model Master Acryl paints almost exclusively for the last eight years, I recently switched to Citadel paints after several strong recommendations. Both of these brands are excellent, and would work great for minimate customs. However, I have noticed a few differences between them, and I wanted to share my findings with you.
